Ordinary, daily events are uniquely woven
between the present and the past. The
author describes movingly how the simple
task of slicing a stick of butter into small
little squares sparked memories of the
relieving  food distribution by the U.S. Army
in southern Germany 1945; or
remembering the horrors of war while
stuck in St. Louis city traffic during a lawful
Nazi parade. And when in 1990 the
author's older son was ready to be
deployed to Desert Shield, she relived the
agonizing years as a daughter in WWII, and
as a wife during Vietnam.
Anke recounts the he long awaited
reunification of  her native country in moving
short stories, vignettes and poetry; she
masterly connects the past to the present.
Her chance meeting with a 1948 Berlin Airlift
‘Raisin Bomber' crew member, is a
fascinating closing of  the cycle of history
and fate.
